2016 Expansion Draft
By October 4 all existing teams must submit a list of unprotected players to the commissioner
Teams may protect up to and not above 80% of the players on their roster that are under contract.
Players that are due to become free agents following the 2015 season do not qualify as part of the 20% of unprotected players.
Any team with only 1 player under contract will not be required to contribute players.
Each team's maximum protection number is listed below.
Teams with 1 player under contract ---> No players left unprotected
Teams with 2-5 players under contract ---> 1 player left unprotected
Teams with 6-10 players under contract ---> 2 players left unprotected
Teams with 11-15 players under contract ---> 3 players left unprotected
Teams with 16-20 players under contract ---> 4 players left unprotected
Teams with 21-25 players under contract ---> 5 players left unprotected
Teams with 26-30 players under contract ---> 6 players left unprotected
Teams with 31+ players under contract ---> 7 players left unprotected
On October 11 the Expansion Draft Lottery will be held to determine which team picks first in the Expansion Draft.
The 2 expansion teams will alternate the 1st pick each round.
From October 12 - October 18 the Expansion Draft will take place.
There will be 7 rounds for the expansion draft and a maximum 14 players to be selected. Expansion teams may forego any selections if they choose.
Each team will have 12 hours to make a selection and must notify the commissioner of their choice.
No existing teams shall forfeit more than 3 players, regardless of the number of players they must leave unprotected and available for the expansion draft.
Once a team has had 3 players chosen from it's list of unprotected players, that team's remaining list of unprotected players will no longer be accessible.
Expansion teams must assume the contracts of the players they are selecting. The expansion draft acts the same as a trade and expansion teams MAY
extend contracts, per the rules of a trade.
All expansion draft information will be posted on this page, including the results of the draft in October.
